December 12—There were protests in a number of cities around the country in response to a “Women and Allies” call to “deliver the message in a unified voice that we are ready to stand against any government action that would serve to erode the rights of women and other vulnerable groups.” Along with New York City and Los Angeles, we’ve so far heard of actions in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and Portland, Oregon.
In New York City, 200 to 300 rallied and marched. A reader reported: “There were people with all kinds of perspectives, deeply troubled by the advent of the Trump presidency… People were HUNGRY for the signs saying ‘In the name of humanity, We REFUSE to Accept a Fascist America’… Eve Ensler gave a POWERFUL opening to the event in which she emphasized the need to act now to STOP Trump before he achieves the full reins of governmental power….” The Revolution Club marched in formation to join the action.
In Los Angeles, over 100 marched from Trump’s star at the Hollywood “Walk of Fame” to the CNN building. The Revolution Club reported: “People chanted things like ‘no inauguration without investigation.’ We came up with a better chant: ‘In the name of liberation, we say no inauguration.’ We wanted to unite with the defiant spirit and counter the implication that if there is an investigation which yields no evidence of Russian influence in the election, the inauguration would be acceptable. Fascism is not acceptable under any conditions. We did some agitation about the need to get organized for revolution and to get organized to stop fascism before it starts. We told people about the month of resistance and challenged them around the need to build mass resistance to stop this rather than relying on the Democrats or the Electoral College to save us. We led people in a pledge of resistance—people raised their fists and came up to us afterward wanting to know what we were all about.”
