Unarmed Black Man Shot by Texas Pig—for No Reason—and Paralyzed for Life
December 29, 2016 | Revolution Newspaper | revcom.us
In July 2016 David Collie, a 33-year-old Black man in Fort Worth, Texas, was shot in the back by pigs, and he ended up being paralyzed. On December 27, the police cruiser dash cam video of the shooting was released. It shows the cop car pulling into a parking lot of a residential complex. Immediately, two cops with guns drawn rush toward Collie, who is walking normally with his shirt off on a hot summer night. Within 15 seconds, one of the cops fires and hits Collie in the back. He falls to the ground, and the video shows the cops just standing over him, not providing any medical aid.
David Collie spent two months in a hospital handcuffed to a bed, and he will never walk again. The cops said they were looking for a Black man with no shirt on who allegedly committed a robbery. They claimed Collie pointed a box cutter at them. In the video, he is not holding any object.
A grand jury refused to indict Collie for any crime, but he is still paralyzed for life. The cop who pulled the trigger has been placed on "restricted duty" only since the video was released and went viral. The cops have refused to hand over any records about the shooting to Collie's attorney.
David Collie was another Black man who "fit the description" and ended up a victim of this system’s armed enforcers. There is an epidemic of police murder and terror against Black and Brown people, and it must stop!
