Fox Censors 84 Lumber’s Super Bowl Ad
February 6, 2017 | Revolution Newspaper | revcom.us
Fox would not show the Super Bowl ad that was developed by 84 Lumber, a Pennsylvania building supply company, because it showed a representation of Trump’s huge border wall. 84 Lumber was forced to remove that part before Fox would allow it to be shown.
The full 6 minute ad shows a woman and her daughter making an arduous and difficult trip through Mexico to the U.S. border. Interspersed, workers are shown building something with wood. When the two get to the border there is a huge, tall, impenetrable wall. The daughter takes a torn American Flag out of her backpack and gives it to her mother who is crying. Then they see something—a very large wooden door in the wall. They push on the door and it opens into the U.S. A construction truck is then shown driving down the road and the ad finishes with the message, “The will to succeed is always welcomed here.”
What Fox allowed to be shown was part of the trip through Mexico but they refused to show the part with the wall, the door to get through the wall, and the workers building something. The Fox ad just ends with no conclusion to the journey.
84 Lumber was mentioned more than 80,000 times on Twitter during the game, and there was so much internet traffic trying to watch the full ad that it shut down the company’s website.
In addressing what Fox did, a person for the company that developed that ad said, “Ignoring the border wall and the conversation around immigration that’s taking place in the media and at every kitchen table in America just didn’t seem right.”
