“Knock down this wall!”:
The Dresden Symphony Orchestra Against Trump’s Wall

June 26, 2017 | Revolution Newspaper | revcom.us

The Dresden Symphony Orchestra, Germany, did a tour in Mexico against the Trump/Pence wall. Its vibrant musical performance started on June 3 in Tijuana right on the border with the County of San Diego. The vision of this concert by director Markus Rindt is to culturally show opposition to and to Knock down this wall! which the fascist Trump/Pence regime intends to extend. At the location, they were joined by other musicians like Tijuana No, and about 2,000 people attended.

That same day, in Mexico City, in front of the U.S. Embassy, about 40 people demonstrated, uniting with the concert of the Dresden Symphony Orchestra, to denounce and reject the fascist Trump/Pence regime. Calling for and participating in this protest were compañeras and compañeros from the Frente Popular Francisco Villa Independiente, the Sindicato Mexicano de Electricistas, the Movimiento Popular Revolutionario, and the Asamblea General de Trabajadores. It was an important denunciation of the fascist Trump/Pence regime, and a call to redouble efforts to unite the peoples of the world to drive out the fascist Trump/Pence regime, in unity with the Refuse Fascism movement (refusefascism.org) in the U.S.

The Dresden Symphony Orchestra closed its tour with an emotional, vibrant, and combative concert in Mexico City on June 10 on the esplanade of the Monument to the Revolution, in addition to performing days earlier in the city of Puebla. This concert strengthened international ties in the field of culture with the participation of singer Sara Curruchich from Guatemala, who, as a protest and denunciation, dedicated some of their songs to all the disappeared in the world, to the women murdered, to the 43 disappeared students of Ayotzinapa, and to the more than 43 girls who died in the fire locked in an institution in Guatemala. Although the full orchestra could not participate in this event, it was a very emotional cultural expression of denunciation and resistance.

At the end of the concert, members of the Movimiento Popular Revolucionario, with translation help from a couple of reporters who contributed to this effort for the unity and solidarity with this initiative by the Dresden Symphony Orchestra, talked with director Markus Rindt. Among other things, we put out the slogan NO! In the Name of Humanity, We Refuse to Accept a Fascist America!, and we briefly talked to him about the Refuse Fascism initiative in the United States (more information at RefuseFascism.org). The director expressed basic unity with the slogan and we thanked him a lot for this excellent initiative of internationalist spirit in the interest of all humanity.
