FRIDAY, JULY 23, 7PM, In-Store at Revolution Books, NYC
SPECIAL SHOWING OF SUMMER OF SOUL
Over the course of six weeks during the summer of 1969, the extraordinary Harlem Cultural Festival took place at what is today Marcus Garvey Park. Performers included Stevie Wonder, Nina Simone, Sly & the Family Stone, Gladys Knight & the Pips, B.B. King, Abbey Lincoln, Mahalia Jackson, and others.
The footage of what came to be called "Black Woodstock" was never seen and largely forgotten...UNTIL NOW.
In his acclaimed debut as a filmmaker, Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson presents this powerful and transporting documentary. Part music film, part historical record, Summer of Soul captures the creative energy and defiance of Black music and culture at a time when “revolution was in the air.”
It’s special to experience Summer of Soul at Revolution Books. We are now in a rare time, like the 1960s, when revolution becomes possible. Revolution Books is contributing all that we can to seizing on this rare opportunity... to actually make the revolution to get rid of this capitalist-imperialist system... to bring a whole new society and world into being. And culture is a vital part of the revolution to change everything.
Searchlight Pictures has made available to Revolution Books a special print to project for this one-time showing at the store. Bring your friends and family. There’ll be informal discussion afterward.
