Enough is Enough! A March of Stolen Lives

On Tuesday, January 27, a press conference was held at the Fruitvale BART station—the site of Oscar Grant’s murder, to announce a March of Stolen Lives in Oakland on Friday, February 6. In announcing the demonstration organizers said, “There is a nationwide epidemic of police brutality and murder being unleashed upon our people by the whole system that rules over us. In the time that we are told the society is now “post-racial”—these killings are overwhelmingly, but not exclusively, against young people of color. And the numbers of stolen lives are on the rise. WE SAY “ENOUGH IS ENOUGH! THE WHOLE DAMN SYSTEM IS GUILTY!”

A statement to the people of Oakland and the Bay Area from Cornelius Hall, the father of Jerrold Hall, an unarmed Black man shot in the back by BART police officer Fred Crabtree in 1992, was read at the press conference: “Stay focused. Do not relent until justice has been served. I sit here looking at my son’s skateboard which has a sticker that reads ‘SILENCE IS THE VOICE OF COMPLICITY.’ You have not been silent. You have not been silent and have demanded that those who work for you give you respect and JUSTICE.”
