“He had so many dreams left to fulfill." These were the words of Karolina Rojas Alvarez about her 25-year-old husband Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero, murdered by ICE agents in cold blood.
Johan Sebastián Guerrero had come to the U.S. from Colombia in 2023 and was living with his wife and their 3-year-old daughter in the Biddeford, Maine area. Johan was described as an affectionate, loving, and energetic person, who was working two jobs to help build a life for his young family. He was legally authorized to work in the U.S., had a Social Security number, and was in the process of seeking asylum.
On Sunday, July 12, Johan took his daughter to the park. His wife reports they had “a wonderful time,” and that the next afternoon “was supposed to be her day with her dad.”
But none of that mattered to ICE and the fascist Trump regime.
At 7:20 am on July 13 an ICE agent shot and killed Johan just after he left home to drive to work. After ICE pulled him from the car, an eyewitness said, “He was bleeding profusely from the head. He was talking. He said, 'I tried to stop.'” At least four bullet holes were seen in the car’s windshield. A video published by The Bangor Daily News shows ICE agents handcuffing Johan as he lay on the ground, motionless.
His wife Karolina rushed to the scene with their daughter and saw the immediate aftermath of the shooting. Soon after, she was seen “kneeling and wailing near her husband in the street as their daughter looked on.”
“I watched a wife fall to her knees looking at her husband’s dead body on the ground,” a neighbor said. “I watched a little girl crying with a little pink backpack on because she’s never going to see her father again.”
Afterward Karolina posted “I have no words for this pain, my life, my love,” and wrote, “now my daughter is asking about her father, and I don’t have the strength to tell her that he’s not coming, that she can’t hug him anymore or say, 'Papi, I love you.'”
Not that it matters, but it turns out that Johan wasn’t even the person ICE was looking for. But on a deeper level, for this regime, it's open season on any and all Brown people.
Such is the bottomless cruelty of the fascist Trump regime and its ICE enforcers.
Trump Doubles, Triples Down on Murder, Terror
Johan was shot down less than a week after 52-year-old Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, from Mexico, was murdered by ICE agents in Houston, Texas. Since Trump took office, at least 23 people have been fired on by federal immigration agents. Six, including three U.S. citizens, have been killed. Nearly all of these people were murdered by ICE agents firing into vehicles. This doesn't include the at least 52 people who died in ICE custody during that period.
(See, The Cold-Blooded Murder of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo and the Urgent Need to End this System, July 13, 2026)
These two latest killings, coming on top of ICE’s other atrocities, jolted people across the country. “Latino Americans Are in Shock,” was the headline of a New York Times opinion piece by a former immigration policy adviser in the Obama and Biden administrations.

In response to growing criticism and controversy, on July 14, ICE ordered its agents to halt most vehicle stops across the country.
The very next day, Trump demanded that ICE continue the vehicle stops:
The men and women of ICE are doing a GREAT job, one that has to be done… The Open Border Policy of Sleepy Joe Biden allowed 25,000,000 people to pour into our Country, unchecked and unvetted. Many were Criminals, and we have to get them out. In order to do this, we must be strong, tough, and smart, and we CANNOT give up one of I.C.E.’s most important and effective Crime Fighting tools, THE TRAFFIC STOP! Once we do, we are playing right into the criminal’s hands. (Emphasis added)1
So Trump is applauding ICE for its open murder….and calling for more!
And this is precisely the point: traffic stops are not the most "efficient" way to carry out mass deportations. But they are an "efficient" way to spread widespread terror among all immigrants, and Latino and Black people overall.
This is the ethnic cleansing Trump promised. Think about it: how different, really, is this from the public lynching of Black people during Jim Crow? Whether or not you immediately faced the threat of lynching, all Black people knew that threat was hanging over their heads.
This is how you spread terror throughout whole peoples…This is how you push whole peoples deeper into the shadows, and terrorize many into self-deporting on a mass scale.
This terrorist assault on immigrants—legal and not—is accelerating before our eyes: Thousands of immigrants were taken into ICE detention in June and the first part of July. In one 5-day period in late June alone, ICE arrested over 10,000 people. ICE officials were told by their higher-ups that “2,000 arrests a day was the new standard for enforcement.”
And this wave of assaults is acting as a battering ram for the regime that is moving relentlessly to dismantle 150 years of the established form of capitalist rule.
Why Do People Come Here from All Over the World?
Go deeper to understand how U.S. imperialism has driven people to the U.S. from all over the world:
• Watch:
Bob Avakian: Why do people come here from all over the world?
–Excerpt from 2003 speech “Revolution: Why It’s Necessary, Why It’s Possible, What It’s All About”
• Read: An Imperialist Parasitic Harvest: Savagely Exploitative and Entrenched, A contribution on the Historical Roots of the U.S. Domination of Mexico, by Juan Rojo, revcom.us, July 20, 2025
The U.S. rulers, whatever their party affiliation, have exploited, oppressed, discriminated against, and generally used and abused immigrants and the foreign-born since this country’s founding.
Meanwhile, the functioning of their predatory capitalist-imperialist system has brought death, destruction, brutal tyrannies and vicious exploitation to oppressed countries around the world, giving many millions little choice but to migrate—often to the U.S.—rather than face death, torture, or starvation, as we’ve exposed at revcom.us
To take one glaring example: the Latin American country of Colombia has long been dominated and exploited by U.S. imperialism. In April, 2021, after the pro-U.S. government tried to raise taxes, Colombians rose in their masses—not just against the tax increase, but against “deep and widespread poverty, high unemployment, enormous disparities of wealth and income, and a devastating third wave of the coronavirus in a country that already had one of the world’s highest infection and death rates.”
Colombia’s government responded by deploying thousands of police and soldiers to suppress the protests. They had been trained for counter-insurgency war, largely by the U.S., under “Plan Colombia,” which was enacted in 2000 under President Bill Clinton.
Over decades, the U.S. “funneled hundreds of millions of dollars yearly to the Colombian military, in the name of the ‘war on drugs.’… Thousands of people were killed by the U.S.-trained forces during the years of Plan Colombia. The Washington Post reported, ‘Nearly 7 million Colombians (were) driven from their homes—the highest number of what the United Nations considers ‘internally displaced people’ in the world.’” (Emphasis added.)
And THAT is one reason people are driven to this country!

WHY Trump Fascists Are Deadly Serious about Making America White Again
Trump’s insistence that terrorist, potentially murderous ICE “traffic stops” must continue is just the latest example of how serious he and his fascist regime are about radically remaking the U.S. to be white and Judeo-Christian once again.
The rulers of this system as a whole have demonized and mass deported immigrants, but the Trump/MAGA fascist program is taking this to the level of straight-up ethnic cleansing driven by open white supremacy and xenophobic (the hatred of "foreigners") viciousness.
As we wrote in The Cold-Blooded Murder of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo and the Urgent Need to End this System:
The wholesale assault on immigrants is a cornerstone of the Trump/MAGA fascist order rapidly being consolidated. The people shaping and leading the fascist movement in this country—people like Donald Trump, Stephen Miller, Steve Bannon, Pete Hegseth—aren’t simply racists who use racism and hatred of immigrants to whip up their mobs of racist followers (although they do plenty of that). They are aiming to lock in a full-on fascist America violently dominating the global system of capitalism-imperialism. These fascists are convinced that people from what Trump has called “shit-hole countries” must be purged from the U.S. They make the lynch-mob enflaming and warmongering claims that immigrants from third world countries “poison the blood” of the U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio spelled out this fascist logic last February at an International Security Conference in Munich:
...in pursuit of a world without borders, we opened our doors to an unprecedented wave of mass migration that threatens the cohesion of our societies, the continuity of our culture, and the future of our people. We made these mistakes together, and now, together, we owe it to our people to face those facts and to move forward, to rebuild... Mass migration is not, was not, isn’t some fringe concern of little consequence. It was and continues to be a crisis which is transforming and destabilizing societies all across the West.
This Whole Damn System Is Guilty as Hell for the Murder of Johan Guerrero…Get With the Revolutionary Way Out, the Path to a Fundamentally Different System
The workings of this system have caused tremendous economic, political and ecological turmoil around the world—causing millions to flee their homelands for the basic ability to survive. And this system has no answers to this except prisons, walls, and with fascism in power, death and ramped up deportation.
As Trump unleashes his ICE gestapo thugs with a license to kill, everyone who has a heart for humanity—and doesn't want to lose their own humanity—needs to rise up against this fascist terror.
There is a revolutionary way out of this madness, and a whole new way to live and a fundamentally different system that's possible. There is leadership for this in the revolutionary leader Bob Avakian, and the new communism he has forged.
The blueprint and plan for this new way to live and fundamentally different system is spelled out in detail in the Constitution for the New Socialist Republic of North America (Draft Proposal), authored by Bob Avakian, and it takes a radically different approach to immigration and immigrants than this system and its exploiters' constitution. The fact is that the new socialist republic will need people who will be eager to jump into building a new society moving toward doing away with exploitation and oppression and who, right away, would be welcomed: “[I]mmigrants, from all parts of the world, who have a sincere desire to contribute to goals of the new socialist republic will be welcome in this republic.”
IN THE NAME OF HUMANITY, WE REFUSE TO ACCEPT A FASCIST AMERICA!
WE NEED AND WE DEMAND: A WHOLE NEW WAY TO LIVE, A FUNDAMENTALLY DIFFERENT SYSTEM!
Constitution for the New Socialist Republic in North America (Draft Proposal), H. Immigrants, Citizenship and Asylum, pp. 62-63
3. The orientation of the New Socialist Republic in North America is to welcome immigrants from all over the world who have a sincere desire to contribute to the goals and objectives of this Republic, as set forth in this Constitution and in laws and policies which are established and enacted in accordance with this Constitution. From the time of the establishment of the New Socialist Republic in North America, anyone residing outside of the territory of this Republic who wishes to enter its territory, and any such person wishing to become a citizen, or a permanent resident, of this Republic, must follow the relevant laws and procedures which have been established on the basis of this Constitution. Anyone who applies for asylum in this Republic and, through the relevant procedures that have been established for this purpose, is found to have been persecuted, or to have a well-founded fear of persecution, on account of having taken part in just struggles against imperialist and reactionary states or other reactionary forces, or on account of scientific, artistic, or other pursuits which have brought them into conflict with reactionary powers and institutions, shall be afforded asylum in the New Socialist Republic in North America, so long as they pledge to act in compliance with the Constitution of this Republic, and do act accordingly. Provided that they do not engage in any serious violation of the laws of this Republic, people granted asylum have the right to remain within the territory of this Republic for as long as they choose to do so, and shall be accorded the same rights as citizens, with the exception that, so long as they have not become citizens, they may not vote in elections or be elected or appointed to public office. They shall have the right, after a certain period, determined by law, to become citizens of this Republic, with the same rights and responsibilities as all other citizens. The citizenship process, as well as review of the asylum status of all those granted asylum, shall be carried out in accordance with the laws and procedures established for these purposes.
