Poets Against Fascism

Thursday, April 10, 7-9pm
Join us for an inspirational evening of poetry readings by a variety of artists!

Look, we're facing a full-out fascist regime. Openly hateful... undisguisedly repressive... hellbent on remaking society and the world in its ugly fascist image.

The revolutionary leader Bob Avakian has stated:

"This is a time for reaching out to all the others who feel the same outrage at Trump/MAGA fascism-- a time for collective actions and self-sacrificing struggle for the greater good: the greater good of defeating this fascism." Time is short, and the stakes are high.

On April 10th, these poets will be sounding the call through their art, passion, and conviction:
IN THE NAME OF HUMANITY, WE REFUSE TO ACCEPT A FASCIST AMERICA!

NIKKI KRAMER - writer, visual artist, and art event coordinator. She lives in Brooklyn, creates zines and chapbooks and hosts music and writing events in multiple spaces. Upcoming chapbook: The Source IG: art_by_nikki_k.

PAMELA L. LASKIN - former faculty member at City College, where she directed The Poetry Outreach Center. Author of five books of poetry, and most recently, her young adult novels and poetry focus on political and social justice freedoms. She is a proud supporter of Revolution Books.

CHANEL BURNS - Chanel is an artist and writer based in East Village. Her work is sourced from a well of dreams, visions, collective imagination and spiritual inquiry.

ALBERT DEPAS - visual artist, poet and educator. Author, Metamorphosis of Joy and The High. "I participate to preserve free speech and the freedom of the human’s spirit in the creative process."

BROOKE FINEGOLD - artist, poet, comedian, community event host who explores the sparkly facets of queerness, family, love and the body. She writes for @gaydarshow, runs @lesbianhands, hosts the Poetry is Gay salon at Singers and Comedy is Gay show at the Standard/Highline.

RASHIDAH ISMAILI - "As a writer and former Creative Writer, MA and MFA professor, I wish to be engaged in the discussion of how to be a concerned citizen of this world. I hope the arts will humanise us all and encourage our empathy and intelligence in making this a better world for all to enjoy."

MARZ LONGMA - Musician, Poet, Story-time teller, Actor, and Director. Youtube: @marzlongma1369

ILKA SCOBIE - a poet who teaches in the NYC public school system. Also writes about art for London Artlyst; deputy editor of LiveMag, a literary magazine; co-curator of a group show ART AM 3 in Soncino, Italy. Her recent poetry has appeared in Urban Graffiti, Vanitas and Poetry in Performance.

BARRY WALLENSTEIN - Author of 13 collections of poetry, most recent Playing in Overtime. Emeritus Professor of Literature and Creative Writing at City University of New York. "I look forward to joining other voices in protest against the current administration's ultra-nationalistic agenda and the nation's drift into fascism."
I am because we are. – Senegalese proverb

This is where Revolution Books comes in. Revolution Books is where the whole world comes first, and the poetic spirit meets the search for the truth.

Where we carry a selection of a wide range of crucial literature — poetry, books on the history, culture and struggle of African American, Latine, Asian and Native peoples, women and LGBTQ, immigrants, books on science - all now under attack.

Satsuki Ina presents her memoir: THE POET AND THE SILK GIRL

Friday, April 11th, 7 p.m.

In 1941 US President Franklin D. Roosevelt issued Executive Order 9066 and invoked the 1798 Enemy Aliens Act, and 125,000 people of Japanese descent,
including newlyweds and American citizens Itaru and Shizuko Ina, were forcibly removed and incarcerated in remote concentration camps for years,
without charges, trial or due process.

Many of their homes, property and businesses were stolen by their white neighbors, and never returned. These fundamental violations of basic rights and US constitutional rights were a consequence of war time patriotism and racism and intended by the government to intensify that hysteria - to unite the country behind racism and patriotism against “the enemy”.

Satsuki Ina was born to Itaru and Shizuko during their imprisonment. She is a psychotherapist and an activist and weaves their story together in this moving mosaic through diary entries, photographs, clandestine letters, and heart-wrenching haiku. She reveals how this intrepid young couple navigated life, love, loss, and loyalty tests in the welter of World War II-era hysteria.

From Heyday, the publisher:

The Poet and the Silk Girl illustrates through one family’s saga the generational struggle of Japanese Americans who resisted racist oppression, fought for the restoration of their rights, and clung to their full humanity in the face of adversity.

With psychological insight, Ina excavates the unmentionable, recovering a chronicle of resilience amid some of the severest blows to American civil liberties. As she traces the legacies of trauma, she connects her family’s ordeal to modern-day mass incarceration at the U.S.-Mexico border.

Lyrical and gripping, this cautionary tale implores us to prevent the repetition of atrocity, pairing healing and protest with galvanizing power.

In this time when Trump MAGA fascism is incarcerating and deporting immigrants to hell hole prisons without due process, along with a furious onslaught of other fascist measures, when the government is declaring it is acting under the authority of very same Enemy Aliens Act which was used against the Japanese in World War II and has not been used since,

Revolution Books is proud to host Satsuki Ina and we invite everyone to come, listen and engage on these crucial questions.

NEVER AGAIN IS NOW!
