Early Saturday morning, while most of America was asleep, Trump launched an unprovoked attack against Iran. Trump called for a total change of regime and claimed he was doing this to help the Iranian people and to end what he claimed as Iranian aggression against the U.S.

In fact, the U.S.-Israeli war against Iran is criminal and unjust. Trump’s unprovoked attack will mean death and suffering for the Iranian people, and holds danger for wider regional war, which could spiral even further into world war.

Trump's attack on Iran has nothing to do with “liberating the Iranian people.” The bullshit coming from Trump to justify this war would be laughable were it not so utterly dangerous and so guaranteed to produce destruction and horror. Already, dozens of young women and girls were killed at a school in the city of Minab by American bombs. Trump has explicitly called for regime change. This war is U.S. capitalism-imperialism, now headed by a fascist regime, moving to qualitatively tighten its domination over the Middle East and to strengthen its position against its imperialist rivals China—which imports more than 80 percent of Iran’s oil—and Russia, which maintains close ties to the Iranian regime.  

Trump threatened that “a terrorist regime must never have a nuclear weapon.” But the biggest terrorist regime in the world is the U.S. empire which is armed to the teeth with nuclear weapons and has killed literally millions of civilians since World War 2, inflicting more terror on humanity than the rest of the world put together. In addition, Israel, America’s long-time attack dog in the Middle East, has about 200 nuclear weapons—though it’s never admitted it. This unprovoked U.S.-Israeli war—and, again, that is what it is—not only will end in the needless deaths of many of Iran’s 90 million people but exponentially heightens the danger of global conflict in different ways, conflict that could involve other imperialist powers and, with the “logic” of war, eventually lead to all-out nuclear war. 

In Trump's announcement of "major combat operations" against Iran, he told a distorted history of Iran which left out the 1953 coup against the democratically elected government of Mohammed Mossadegh and the blood-soaked 25-year rule of the despot they then installed to rule Iran, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi. And who carried out this coup? The U.S. Central Intelligence Agency. Thousands of dissidents and revolutionaries were killed by the Shah and tens of thousands were arrested and tortured in the Shah’s dreaded prisons. And again, who supervised all this and poured in aid and advisers to carry it out? The CIA. Trump’s distorted history also left out economic warfare (“sanctions”) that has made life increasingly unbearable for masses of people there, as well as the fact that the U.S. armed both sides in the 1980s Iran-Iraq war to heighten the slaughter going on.

The current repressive regime in Iran should not be supported. This is an utterly reactionary, theocratic and viciously patriarchal regime that has carried out terrible repression against the Iranian people. Iran killed tens of thousands in demonstrations this winter, in the 2022 protests under the banner of “Woman, Life, Freedom” and holds hundreds of political prisoners. But—again—the fascist Trump, himself heading up a patriarchal Christian fascist regime, cares nothing about that. Fascist imperialist gangsters can't be liberators. Trump is operating out of what he perceives to be the interests of U.S. imperialism and fully expects to dominate Iran should the U.S. win.

People in the U.S. have a special responsibility to stop the crimes of "our government." We must unite immediately and as broadly as possible to demand: STOP THE U.S. WAR AGAINST IRAN.

The role of Israel—which has joined the U.S. in this war—is beyond ugly. Israel is itself an illegitimate settler state with a truly blood-soaked history in the region—including its ongoing genocide against the Palestinians in Gaza and increasingly the West Bank—fully supported by both Biden and Trump. But this is not a situation of Israel controlling the U.S. The situation is the opposite—Israel carries out American imperialist interests in the Middle East, even as it also sees the destruction of the Iranian state and the unleashing of what it hopes will be chaos in its own interests.

This war will give Trump a pretext to step up repression within the U.S. and to seize even more powers for his regime. While Congressional hearings or approval would in no way “validate” this war, the fact that this fascist did not even bother to make a show of seeking this is a further step toward consolidating all-out fascism. This makes the foolish and very dangerous notion that “Trump is losing,” and focusing one’s attentions and efforts on the mid-terms, all the more irresponsible. What is needed is massive, relentless and sustained nonviolent protests in the streets demanding the removal of this fascist regime.

MOST IMPORTANT: This war flows out of a system—capitalism-imperialism. So long as this system exists, in the U.S. and around the world, people will be exploited, oppressed, kept ignorant, and driven to mutual, pointless and truly horrific slaughter in one war after another—even one leading to the overall extinction of humanity.
